Toddler's Grocery Cart and Fabric Groceries, 04.25.24

Description: This project is a toddler’s rolling grocery cart, containing five plush groceries. The cart is constructed from wood and equipped with large plastic wheels secured by metal bolts. The cart features a designated infant seat area for play dolls, along with a removable hanging bag designed to conveniently store the plush groceries. Each plush grocery item is crafted from thin cotton material, offering a soft and tactile experience for toddlers. The accompanying bag is made from thicker cloth and secured with button snaps so it may be removed by a guardian when needed.

Process: I focused on refining my finishing skills in both machine sewing and woodworking. In order to achieve a toy fit for children to play with, I needed to take extra consideration in each step in the process to ensure the safety and durability of the toy. I made deliberate choices to purchase non-toxic materials. Additionally, I took extra care to conceal seams and screws, minimizing potential hazards and enhancing the overall aesthetic appeal of the finished product. This piece could fit into a family home while also meeting the standards for commercial sale.

Reflection: The strengths of this project is the finish quality, making it an ideal prototype for a marketable product. The attention to detail and craftsmanship have resulted in a toy that makes it appealing, safe, and durable. The vibrant color enhances the visual appeal of the toy and it can be pushed smoothly without much effort. My project demonstrates a proficiency in machine sewing and an ability to integrate this discipline with woodworking to create a refined product.
